Acibadem University

Acibadem University Medical students visited Nepal in July 2013 for a social pediatrics project. The project, a public health study whose data is currently being collated and analyzed, has already demonstrated effective results. The project team from the university included six premed students and their advisor Assist. Prof. Dr. Melike Sahiner.

The project took place in the village of Bandipur where 165 children in total from two schools and one learning center were reached. Of them, more than half had never come across a doctor before and had never experienced primary healthcare services before. General health status screenings were carried out through physical examination and routine laboratory tests which included screenings for anemia and diabetes.

Educational and social activities were also conducted with the Nepali children. The teachers of the children joined in the activities, creating effective education about preventative healthcare. A full parasitic and metabolic diseases screening is being performed on the blood and stool samples which were collected from the children. With the gained results, appropriate management advice and medication will be sent to Bandipur through communications with Nepalese doctors.

The Acibadem University group also had the chance to spend 3 days at Siddhi Memorial Hospital in Bhaktapur, observing the health status and awareness of the people as well as the patient approaches of the Nepalese physicians. Afterwards, a doctor, a nurse and a lab technician assisted the team in Bandipur providing local support when needed.

This project is supported by contributions from the Himalayan Voluntourism organization, United Nations Chief Technical Adviser in Kabul, Afghanistan and founder of the Street Kids International foundation Peter Daglish, the Siddhi Memorial Foundation. The project took place with the financial support of Acibadem University. The medications and supplements were donated by Istanbul Pharmaceutical Cooperative.

Acibadem continued their project in 2014 with a visit that provided medical screenings to over 250 children and adults.
